Nixon’s DRT – Support when
natural disasters strike
18
Overview
Challenge
When natural disasters strike, power is
often the first thing to go—and the last
thing to be restored. In these critical
moments, Nixon Power Services stands
ready to provide vital support, ensuring
communities affected by hurricanes, floods,
tornadoes, or storms don’t have to go
without electricity for long. Nixon’s Disaster
Response Team (DRT) plays a crucial role
in delivering Rehlko generators to areas
that are otherwise inaccessible, ensuring
businesses, hospitals, and homes can get
back on their feet quickly. Always prepared,
Nixon’s DRT is committed to responding to
these challenges without delay.
Getting
power
to
disaster-stricken
areas is never simple. The path is often
filled with obstacles, both expected and
unexpected. “Sometimes there’s no fuel
at the gas stations, or you can’t find food
and water… we have to bring all that down
with us usually,” says Devin Simon, a Lead
Technician on the DRT. When normal
routes are impassable, the team must find
ways to adapt. “You get somewhere. The
bridge is gone… You have to be able to
read a map and try roads that the phone
doesn’t tell you anything of,” explains Cyrus
Shular, another DRT technician. And even
when the team reaches their destination,
clearing the way often becomes part of the
job. “Gosh, you know, you bring a chainsaw,”
says William Austin, who has been on the
DRT for 18 years. “I’d always bring my skill
chainsaw for clearing debris out of the
road.” These roadblocks can make what is
already a difficult job even more challenging.
But Nixon’s DRT members are not deterred.
They rely heavily on each other and
their past experiences to navigate these
unpredictable situations.
